Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red 2

My husband and I spent a weekend in London at the end of November, primarily to visit our daughter, who now lives there. While it was a short visit we were able to take in some sights.

High on my list to see was the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London, to commemorate the outbreak of WWI.

I had seen a lot in the press about the installation and even though the dismantling process had begun, it was still worth seeing.

The installation was made up of 888,246 ceramic poppies, each one representing the death of British/Colonial servicemen killed during the war. The poppies really did give the effect of blood flowing.

There were crowds of people there to see the installation; families, tourists, young people and aged veterans. Despite the large number of people gathered, it was very quiet. The work really communicated the scale of the loss of life and the viewers responded with respect.
